Seattle becomes the first Compassionate City that affirms the Charter! Congrats to CAN and the more than 1,000 who tipped the campaign! April 24th at the Center for Spiritual Living will be the official launch of the 10 Year compassionate action. Save the date!

On a smaller scale will be a series of Circles of Compassion at the East West Bookshop in Seattle. See SEEDS guidebook in the box above and flyer for download here:

Hi!
What time is the meeting tomorrow? Can I join in by web conference on my computer? I am almost done the language for the Children's Charter but would like to discuss my idea a little before sending it over as it is in the early stages. However I am very excited to get it going. It is great to see my words......ie what was posted by Karen. The problem I have is that the Charter link below keeps telling me I need an invitation to join?? What do I do? Insight? Thanks!

Thank you for your beautiful work, Jeff!

Will everyone also please share your stories of compassion on the Charter site and other insights and thoughts about compassion here!

Some latest info on the Charter:

On 24th February 2010, a small gathering including Karen Armstrong, Council of Conscience members, the Fetzer Institute, and others will meet to refine our goals and strategies around the work of the Charter for Compassion. Thanks to wonderful input from the partner community, we hope to surface answers to the following questions:

- What problems and opportunities are we addressing?
- What are our theories of change?
- What are our resources? Where are points of synergy?
- What are our parameters? (funding, timeline, scope, scale)

Many thanks to those of you who have filled in the Charter for Compassion survey, your feedback is invaluable for the meeting and will help shape the future direction of the Charter for Compassion.

An opportunity:

During this meeting next week, we will also be sharing your most powerful stories of compassion during or since the launch. These stories can be related to your organisation, can be personal or can be something that you witnessed or heard about. They can be about a complete range of subjects, from your organisation's activities or events, to personal impacts that you or a friend have made that make the world a little more compassionate.

These stories will be shared with members from the Council of Conscience and the Charter for Compassion partner organisations around the world, including the partner media organisations. The most compelling stories may be pushed to the wider media to further the awareness of the positive work of your organisation and compassion in society.

For more information and to quickly add your stories please visit the forum on www.CharterForCompassionConnect.com.

. . . on the site. There is also a space for you to share your compassion or Charter related events and any news you would like to share with the community, Karen Armstrong and the Council of Conscience.

From Gillian Gonda of the Fetzer Institute. Please share any feedback you may have here and we can enter them as one collective voice from CAN before Jan. 29th. Thank you!

19 January 2010

Dear Reverend ,

Thank you for your incredible support and unique interpretations that made the launch of the Charter for Compassion so successful last year. World-wide attention was drawn to the shared vision we all have for a more compassionate world, and your organization played a huge part in making that so. As was said all along, the launch was just the beginning. Now we are looking at fulfilling the vision of the Charter through a transformative, multi-faceted endeavor with more resources and tools for individuals and organizations.

The Fetzer Institute is working with Karen Armstrong to continue this work and as your contributions have been essential to the success achieved so far, we’d love very much to hear from you on what worked about the launch, where there were challenges, and how you might define success for this work moving forward. Your feedback will be invaluable!!

The feedback form will only take a few minutes to complete and is available on the online community CharterforCompassionConnect.com or directly online by clicking here. We would greatly appreciate to receive your feedback by January 29 so that we can incorporate your thoughts into the planning.

Thank you,

Gillian

Activate Compassion with Karen Armstrong

This Friday, December 18th, Karen Armstrong will host a one hour Facebook conversation on compassionate action. Join her at 6pm GMT (1pm EST/10am PST) on the discussion boards and click the link titled "LIVE DISCUSSION WITH KAREN ARMSTRONG 12/18".

Focusing on the calls to action in the Charter (posted below), participants can ask her about and read her thoughts on how we can use the Charter as a summons to creative, practical and sustained action to meet the political, moral, religious, social and cultural problems of our time.

We therefore call upon all men and women ~ to restore compassion to the centre of morality and religion ~ to return to the ancient principle that any interpretation of scripture that breeds violence, hatred or disdain is illegitimate ~ to ensure that youth are given accurate and respectful information about other traditions, religions and cultures ~ to encourage a positive appreciation of cultural and religious diversity ~ to cultivate an informed empathy with the suffering of all human beings—even those regarded as enemies.

A letter dated December 9th from Karen Armstrong. . .

Dear friends,

I can scarcely believe that the Charter for Compassion has launched! Thank you so much for your support and all your hard work for a more compassionate world. I have been overwhelmed and humbled by the Charter's positive reception around the world. It is no exaggeration to say that the success of the launch was due to your efforts. The events, projects and programmes you developed for the launch were outstanding, and I know that much of the global media coverage about the Charter focused on your compassionate activities across the globe.

The Charter for Compassion started as an idea, a vision for a more compassionate world, but you have helped to turn that dream into a reality. Now, the real work starts! The launch was exactly that: a starting point. I have committed to work on the Charter for Compassion until my last breath, and I sincerely hope you will continue to support the Charter with your inspirational activities for as long as you are able to.

Please continue to use the online community, Charter for Compassion Connect, and encourage your colleagues, friends and family to affirm the Charter. As you may have seen from previous emails, on 31 December the names of all affirmers will be sent along with the Charter to five world leaders whose countries are engaged in conflict.

I wish you all a wonderful festive season, full of love and compassion, and look forward to working with you all in the New Year.

Yours,

Karen
