David Breaux Voices of Compassion Part VI

More from the corner in Davis, California, U.S.A. --

Selflessness to the point of caring and suffering for the suffering of others (whether you kow them or not.) Having compassion for humanity is more about accepting that you (the individual) are but a grain in the sand, and so you're struggling so that the grains of sand can all together receive sunlight. Every grain hopes to get to the ocean, but only several get in the ocean. Compassion is accepting that life is mysterious i

Susan Partnow Bringing Compassion to the debate around "Ground Zero Mosque"

I feel deeply called to take a stand for my Muslim brothers and sisters. What does 'hallowed ground' mean? What about the scores of Muslim American victims of 911? To me, what we stand for as USA and what is the appropriate response to terrorism - is to rejoice in having a Mosque, synagogue, church, union hall, ashram or demonstration anywhere, including right at Ground Zero. “Paranoia strikes deep; into your life it will creep; it starts when you’re always afraid.” Please w

Amineh Ayyad A Green Field and honoring the victims of 9/11

I'm not sure where to post the moving note below, so I hope it's ok that I'm posting it here under the News section. Jon, please let me know if this is not ok.

The note reminded me of Yaffa's idea to have an organic farming space at Camp Brotherhood. Gardening is one of the programs I designed for my organization, so, beside the obvious benefits, I see more meaning in a productive green field as part of the work we do. I hope we re-visit this topic again.

I hope this idea is im… Continue

How is Seattle Resilience-Building Compassion in Action?

Susan Partnow Bringing Compassion to Olympia's Jewish Community

Here is a report from Susan Partnow, who was recently invited to create a compassionate and safe space for the Jewish community in Olympia to hold a dialogue. In mid-July, the board of the Olympia Food Co-op, located in the capital of Washington State, decided that the co-op would join an international boycott of Israeli products. This decision provoked extrem

David Hazen Report on the Peacebuilding Peacelearning Intensive

I got to sit next to Betty Reardon and other international, highly connected and respected folk at this training (see attached PDF). It was exhilarating to say the least!

Narine Wandrey August is a Great Month to Prepare for Back-to-School!

But what about people who cannot afford to buy new clothes, or even find the most basic items? Pack together your gently-used items, and instead of re-selling to a store, consider donating them to a worthy, local charity. It's so simple, so important, and so loving! Continue

David Breaux Voices of Compassion Part V

Another friendly installment of Voices of Compassion coming from the corner in Davis, California, U.S.A.

Compassion - to suffer with (literally) but when I use this word I guess I'm referring to an appreciation for the well-being of others -- not just people. To have compassion is to approach the universe with a deep concern and commitment to healing wounds, comforting suffering, enhancing joy, and challenging others to do the same. As I understand it, the word is about a feeli

Sahila ChangeBringer Speak Nicely and Say Nothing?

I've written many times before that the demand for 'civil discourse' misses the point and is more often than not a demand that people with uncomfortable things to say simply "shut up"... see here, from another writer:

" There is an unfortunate tendency to assume that civil discourse has occurred whenever two or more people are nice to each other, say something, and don’t get into an argument. That is misleading on

Grant. A counter rally was also held and a heated confrontation between the two
sides ensued. I went to talk with participants on all sides about their views
